CO₂DataShare – Terms for user registration 2026

Welcome as a user of CO2Datashare

The CO2 Storage Data Consortium provides access to a digital platform for sharing open Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) data, referred to as the “Portal”.

The consortium participants, or the party/parties that at any given time owns and operates the Portal, are hereinafter referred to as the “Provider.” More information about the Provider can be found here.

In order, inter alia, to safeguard users’ interests and to ensure that the Portal maintains the necessary credibility and trust, the following general terms of use (the “Terms”) shall apply.

The Terms are deemed understood and accepted by you upon the creation of your user account for use of the Portal.

1. PURPOSE OF THE PORTAL

CO₂ DataShare is a web portal operated for the purpose of:

  • Providing access to open datasets from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) research and demonstration projects;
  • Facilitating the sharing of open Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) data in a secure and efficient manner.
  • Supporting collaboration in the preparation and management of new datasets.

The Portal is intended primarily for research, development and education.

The Portal enables the downloading of existing data available on the platform (directly from the web site or via API) and supports the structuring and documentation of users’ own data prior to sharing on the platform.

2. USER REGISTRATION

Use of the Portal, except direct download of open data from the web site, requires that you create a user account. As part of the registration process, you are required to provide certain information as set out below. By submitting this information, you consent to the processing and storage of your personal data, including for creation of anonymized statistics, for as long as your user account remains active, further described below in article 7.

By registration you confirm that you are at least 18 years old, and that the information provided is accurate at the time of registration.

Registration and use of an account are permitted only by a natural person. By registering, the user represents that it is a human and not an automated system, bot, script, or similar technology. The use of automated means to create or operate accounts, or to circumvent measures designed to prevent such use, is strictly prohibited.

Within the Portal, the following personal information provided by you may be visible to the Provider:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your organisation and/or affiliation
  • Country

3. USER RESPONSIBILITIES

By registering a user account you agree to:

  • Use the Portal and its datasets in accordance with applicable laws and dataset-specific licenses;
  • Not attempt to circumvent access controls, API rate limits, or security mechanisms;
  • Not misuse the Portal in a manner that could compromise its integrity or availability.

Misuse may result in suspension or termination of access.

By downloading a dataset via the API functionality, the user is deemed to have accepted and agreed to be bound by the terms of the applicable dataset license.

4. DELETION OF USER ACCOUNT

You may delete your user account at any time. The Provider reserves the right to delete user accounts that have been inactive for a period of two (2) years or in the event of a breach of these Terms.

5. CHANGES TO THE PORTAL

The Provider reserves the right to modify, update, or discontinue any part of the Portal at any time, as may be necessary to ensure its continued operation and development and to reflect legal requirements or operational practices.

Significant material changes will be communicated through the Portal or via email. Continued use of the Portal after such updates constitutes acceptance of the revised Agreement.

6. DISCLAIMERS

The Provider disclaims all liability for content, including but not limited to content that violates applicable law or infringes the rights of third parties.

7. PURPOSE AND LEGAL BASIS FOR PROCESSING (GDPR Art. 6)

The Provider processes personal data in accordance with applicable data protection laws and regulations. Your Personal Data is processed for the following purposes:

  • To create, maintain, and authenticate your user account
  • To provide API keys and manage access to datasets
  • To contact you regarding technical issues, account changes, or policy updates
  • To produce anonymized or aggregated statistics about dataset downloads

8. COLLABORATION

Some users may be granted the status of “Collaborator” for the preparation or curation of datasets they own and have decided to share on the portal.

  • Collaborator status is granted manually by Portal administrators;
  • Additional access rights are limited strictly to dataset preparation functions;
  • No additional personal data is collected as part of collaborator status.

9. USER RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTENT

You are solely responsible for any content you upload to the Portal.

10. REMOVAL OF CONTENT

The Provider reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to remove any content that does not comply with the purpose of the Portal or these Terms.

11. AVAILABILITY

The Provider will use reasonable efforts to ensure that the Portal is available at all times. However, the Provider does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation of the Portal.

12. ASSIGNMENT

The Provider may assign or transfer its rights and obligations under these Terms to a third party, including to a legal entity that continues the operation of the Portal.

13. THIRD-PARTY RIGHTS

You undertake to comply with all applicable laws and regulations governing the use of third-party rights, including copyright and other intellectual property rights. The Provider disclaims all liability for any unlawful use of third-party intellectual property by users.

14. GOVERNING LAW AND JURISDICTION

These Terms shall be governed by Norwegian law. Any disputes arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of Oslo District Court, unless otherwise required by mandatory applicable law.
